ABOUT THIS IMAGE

HIV-1 VLPs are internalized by macrophages within CLIC/GEEC tubules

The virus-containing compartment (VCC) is a membranous structure found deep within HIV-1-infected macrophages that accumulates infectious particles. HIV-1 virus-like particles (red) captured by Siglec-1 (magenta) were taken into the macrophage within tubules of the CLIC/GEEC pathway (CD98 staining, green). This study demonstrates that CLIC/GEEC-mediated endocytosis of particles leads to the formation of the VCC and contributes to cell-cell spread of HIV. Candor et al. 2025
