Intensive efforts to prevent and treat malaria infections have yielded substantial gains against the disease in recent decades, particularly in Asia and the Americas. There has been a lesser impact on Plasmodium vivax than on P. falciparum malaria, however, with P. vivax exhibiting a dormant and treatment-resistant liver stage which predisposes those infected to relapsing disease. In a Perspective, Lorenz von Seidlein and Nicholas White introduce a Collection on P. vivax malaria, comprising accompanying review articles on epidemiology of P. vivax, disease prevention and treatment, and radical cure for the disease, with research studies on key topics to appear in this and forthcoming issues.
