Tobacco use is estimated to contribute to no fewer than 6 million deaths each year, a burden that falls disproportionately on people in low- and middle-income countries and is projected to grow to 8 million deaths by 2030. In this month's Editorial, the PLOS Medicine Editors discuss the theme for this year's World No Tobacco Day, which falls on May 31—Tobacco: a threat to development—and argue that, in addition to its efforts in public health, WHO should take a leading role in development of scientific solutions to the worldwide epidemic of tobacco use.
