Genome annotation of Deinococcus deserti, a species isolated from Sahara surface sand, was performed in parallel with proteome analysis. Proteomics and comparative genomics allowed for the correction of several gene prediction errors, which were also present in previously sequenced Deinococcus species. This work demonstrates that accurate primary genome annotation is obtained when a combination of high-throughput proteomic and genomic techniques is used (see de Groot et al., doi:10.1371/journal.pgen.1000434). Remarkably, D. deserti has three recA genes and three lesion-bypass DNA polymerases, which probably contribute to survival in its dry and ultraviolet-exposed extreme environment.
