Grizzly bears transfer salmon nutrients and energy to watersheds, and their densities are strongly coupled to salmon abundance. Owing to these qualities, they are considered surrogates for salmon ecosystem function in research that evaluates trade-offs between grizzlies and fisheries. See Levi, et al. (e1001303), in this issue.
