Reduced root competition in dwarfing fruit trees

Posted by andrewsp on 01 Dec 2022 at 05:48 GMT

This is a fascinating study and reminds of me of the long-term practice of growing fruit trees (especially apples and pears) on dwarfing rootstocks. These dual genetic systems (rootstock and scion) result in reduced root growth and increased crop yields both on a per hectare basis, because of higher planting densities, and on a per unit tree size basis, based on trunk cross-sectional area measured above the graft union. Could similar genetics be present in these dual genetic systems in fruit trees as you see in Arabidopsis?
